From Fiber to Butyrate: The Microbial Partnerships That Make It Possible 

Fiber does not enter the colon and automatically become butyrate. In many cases, no single bacterial species can complete that conversion alone. Butyrate production depends on a series of metabolic exchanges among organisms with different abilities.

Some bacteria begin by breaking complex fibers into smaller carbohydrates. Others ferment those carbohydrates and release compounds such as acetate and lactate. Butyrate-producing bacteria can then use these intermediate products to complete the pathway. This exchange, known as cross-feeding, means that a bacterium can support butyrate production without producing butyrate itself.

Human responses reflect the importance of these partnerships. In one dietary intervention, raw potato resistant starch increased fecal butyrate by 29 percent on average. However, 37 percent of participants showed no increase or experienced a decrease. Greater responses were associated with combinations of starch-degrading bacteria and compatible butyrate producers, not simply the presence of either group alone.
